For Mac, you simply need to download the software and then drag it into your applications folder. We have been using Luminar AI on a Mac computer, but the installation process should be roughly similar if you are using a Windows computer instead. Luminar regularly runs offers and special discounts. Skylum also offers a "Happiness Guarantee", which means that you have 30 days to decide whether it's right for you. Luminar AI 1.0.1 promises to be a more refined version of Luminar AI, with a more convenient Edit panel, a new Import interface and a host of refined and redesigned tools that should make the process of using the software even easier than before.Īs well as being a standalone piece of software, Luminar AI can also be used as a plugin for software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop Elements.Īt the time of writing, you can buy Luminar AI for £79 / $79. In January 2021, an update to Luminar AI - which is a free update for anybody who already has Luminar AI - also became available. That includes a promised 30% faster Sky Enhancer, recognition for more than 7000 kinds of objects and a range of other new AI tools, including Composition AI, Atmosphere AI, Iris AI, and Body AI. Skylum's previous image editing software, Luminar 4, has been discontinued and replaced with AI, even though it is being pitched as a completely new and different product.Īlthough there are some similarities with its predecessor, Skylum says that Luminar AI features a completely new artificial intelligence engine, which means that certain processes can be both smarter and faster. I’m not putting much Luminar how-to content on the site at the moment because Skylum’s repeated relaunches have left a lot of the older content outdated, and I’ve no great confidence that any new tutorials I create will still be relevant next week, let alone in the next version.Luminar AI is claimed to be the first image editor which is entirely powered using artificial intelligence. The basic software is cheap enough, but the ‘extras’ could quickly push the price up well beyond that of its nearest rivals. The second thing I’m not keen on is the way Skylum has pivoted towards paid Extensions as a way of extending Luminar’s capabilities. First, it’s speeded up its rendering by showing only those adjustment effects ‘below’ the current one in the tools stack – this seems a real backward step in a world where other editors preview the cumulative effect all the tools in real-time as you make adjustments. Luminar Neo is not bad, in my opinion, but Skylum has done a couple of things I’m not keen on. Each incarnation features the same core message as previous versions, but with new features added and some old ones removed amid a blizzard of marketing messages. Luminar has always been an exciting and fast-moving newcomer to the photo-editing market, but some of the moves have been so fast and so erratic it’s hard to have a lot of confidence in where it’s going next. Layers has made a return to Luminar Neo and Skylum says a free update is imminent which will add a Clone & Stamp tool to Luminar Neo – that’s another feature that was already in Luminar 4, all those versions ago. It had some new AI tricks, but lost a lot of the more advanced features previously found in Luminar 4, like layers, for example. Luminar AI was not the best incarnation of Skylum’s ever-changing photo editor. It’s probably not a great surprise, as from the moment Luminar Neo was launched, the fact that the older Luminar AI stayed on sale seemed pretty odd.
